Until the Second World War, the weekly markets in the Old Market Square were the most prominent representative element of Šilutė. Right next to this market square the town’s first inn was established, which supposedly helped Šilutė to expand. The famous market operated for nearly few hundred years.

The Old Market Square is still surrounded by old authentic buildings and its area has barely changed over the years, mainly due to an embankment along the Šyša river. This area nearby the Šyša River and the Šilutė manor has been used as a market square for nearly 500 years.

Although the glory days of the square are in the past, it nevertheless is the go-to place for town fairs and events.
