Telšiai is one of the most prominent centers of the Jewish diaspora in Samogitia. The Jewish high school “Ješiva” was established as early as 1873. The school was ran by innovators of Jewish education who pioneered numerous new approaches to studying Jewish religion and law, one of them being the now world-famous Telšiai Torah studying method.

During the interwar period, the oldest Lithuanian rabbi lived in Telšiai. During those years he opened the first Jewish girls' progymnasium in Lithuania, operated two Jewish banks, and was a notable religious teacher to a large and rich Jewish community.

Nearby the yeshiva you can find a chest-resembling sculpture “Skrynia” which is designed to pay homage both to Samogitian and global Jewish diaspora.
